KPIs

A metric with a written definition and a stated source. Anything else is a number people argue about.

The definition is the feature

Every metric here carries its definition — which accounts, over which period, divided by what. That sounds like bookkeeping and it is the thing that decides whether a metric is useful, because the commonest failure of a KPI is not that it is wrong but that two people compute it differently and neither knows.

The KPI engine. Each metric names its definition and its state.

The last row is deliberate. Revenue per head needs a headcount, and there is no payroll source, so it shows nothing at all rather than a number computed from a figure somebody typed once and never updated.

Metrics worth tracking

MetricTells youWatch for
Gross marginWhether the work is profitable before overheads.A slow decline nobody notices month to month.
RunwayHow long the cash lasts. It moves on burn as much as on cash.
Debtor daysHow fast you are paid.A single large late invoice distorting the average.
Overheads as a share of revenueWhether growth is being eaten. It only looks bad in a bad month, which is late.
ConcentrationShare of revenue from the largest customer. The number nobody computes until it matters.
Relate them to goals rather than duplicating them

If a metric is something the company is trying to move, it belongs as a goal in Projects with the projects attached. Track it here; steer it there.

What this does not do

No non-financial data sources

Headcount, pipeline and usage metrics are not connected.

No alerting

Nothing notifies you when a metric crosses a target.

No cohort or per-customer metrics

Aggregate figures from the ledger.

No custom formula language

Definitions are built from available components.

Questions

Can we track a metric the ledger cannot compute?

Not with a live value. It will show as not connected.

Do targets do anything?

They are shown as context. Nothing enforces them.

Can each department have its own KPIs?

Where the ledger carries the dimension, yes.
